Independant Living / Moving On.

This is a new project, which has been up and running since August 2000, thanks to funding from the NLCB. It is the result of a previous project entitled Young GAD, which fulfilled the role of a pilot project examining the areas in which young disabled people need support. The Young GAD project met with young disabled people and provided advice and guidance through group work. This consisted of a regular youth group with school-leavers and explored the young people's visions of life and offered appropriate support and advice. After this initial project, the new Moving On project will look at the following aspects and issues based on those identified by the Young GAD project.

  1. Support for young people leaving special schools, who feel unprepared for the working world.
  2. To provide support, information, training, etc., for the transition to adulthood.
  3. Advocacy for disabled young people leaving institutional living.
  4. Support for young people to acquire more self-confidence and a positive image of themselves.
  5. Encourage young disabled people to develop their own systems of peer support.
  6. Become more involved in GAD.
  7. Provide information, advice and training on employing a personal assistant.
