With July 2015 being Scams Awareness Month, Royal Greenwich Trading Standards have been busy dealing with a variety of scams that have targeted our residents, including a ‘damp’ scam and a mass mailing scam.
‘DAMP’ SCAM – A resident was cold called by two males pretended that he had damp by throwing water in parts of his house – the scammers then said it would cost him £4,800 to hire a drying machine to sort this out.
The resident suspected a scam and phoned the Trading Standards Neighbourhood Response Team on 020 8921 8223 who immediately visited the resident with the police. One of the scammers did phone the resident back, but hung up after the phone was handed to the police. The resident was told to phone 999 if the scammers ever came back.
MASS MAILING SCAM – A resident who was the victim of scam mail over a 26-year period was tricked into spending more than £50,000. Royal Greenwich Trading Standards found scores of mass marketing postal scams in her house including prize draws, one time offers, bogus inheritance claims, international lottery sweepstakes, clairvoyant letters and some charity donation letters.
Mixed in with the mail were many free trinkets and gifts. Most were spiritual charts/aids or ‘good luck charms’. All of these were worthless in value and worthless to the victim.
Measures have now been put in place by Royal Greenwich Trading Standards that will safeguard her from scams of this type in the future.
