Abbey Wood Station

Abbey Wood station’s north entrance to close as major redevelopment work continues

  • Felixstowe Road (Platform 2) entrance will close to passengers on 2 April to enable the construction of new Crossrail platforms and tracks

The Felixstowe Road entrance to Abbey Wood station will close to passengers on 2 April to allow for the construction of new platforms and tracks.

From this date, passengers will only be able to enter and exit the station from Wilton Road so anyone accessing the station from the north side will need to walk over Harrow Manorway Bridge. The diversion is step-free but may potentially add up to 15 minutes to a journey and is expected to remain in place until the end of 2017.

Network Rail needs to close the Felixstowe Road entrance to the station in order to keep passengers, staff and lineside neighbours safe during the construction works whilst still allowing train services to run uninterrupted.

Network Rail continues to make good progress with the station works at Abbey Wood. The new London-bound North Kent Line platform is already in operation and the foundations of the stunning new station are beginning to take shape.

Peter Hume, Senior Programme Manager at Network Rail said: “Although the closure of the Felixstowe Road entrance is unavoidable, we do understand that it is inconvenient to local people and apologise for that.  We are working hard to engage with the local community and will continue to do so throughout the work.  When the new station is open it will significantly improve the passenger experience from Abbey Wood, but we appreciate that there will be some disruption in the meantime.”

Sarah Brown, Major Projects Station Interface Manager, at Southeastern said: “The closure of the Platform 2 entrance at Abbey Wood means that any Southeastern passengers going to or from the northern side of the line will have a longer walk. Please allow enough time to safely catch your train.”

Matthew White, Crossrail Surface Director said: “The Crossrail project will provide a step change in public transport for local people – quicker journeys, new trains, 12 extra services an hour and a brand new landmark station. We will continue to work hard to make sure that any disruption is kept to a minimum for local people while the work is taking place.”

Once the new station is complete at the end of 2017, passengers will benefit from greatly improved services including:

  • A new, larger ticket hall and a spacious concourse that leads directly onto a wide forecourt connecting the station to the Harrow Manorway Flyover
  • New platforms and six lifts providing step-free access to all platforms
  • Better security and customer information systems
